A2 chemistry and beyond: interactive workshops to explore organic and physical chemistry

30 June 2016 09:45-12:00, Pontypridd, United Kingdom

Introduction
Come along to this half-day event and find out more about where chemistry can take you.

Get hands-on in two interactive workshops:
In The Organic ÉîÒ¹¸£Àû¹ú²ú¾«Æ· Laboratory you will discover the importance of esters in our everyday lives. You will synthesise some simple esters, try to identify their characteristic smell and discover how esters are used as flavourings and fragrances. You will then explore the use of esters in common materials by making polyesters. Can you draw the longest polyester fibre?

The Physical ÉîÒ¹¸£Àû¹ú²ú¾«Æ· Laboratory focuses on light and spectroscopy. Use a UV/Vis spectrometer to explore the relationship between the colour of a solution and the light that it transmits, and the concentration of a solution and its corresponding absorbance.
