Biography

Dr Berceste Beyribey Price CSci MRSC AMIChemE is a chemical engineer with over 20 years of experience across academia, industry and government, specialising in hydrogen and low-carbon energy technologies. She currently works at the UK Government Department for Energy Security and Net Zero, where she provides technical and commercial assurance for major hydrogen and carbon capture infrastructure programmes, supporting delivery of the UK鈥檚 decarbonisation strategy.
Berceste began her career in academia, completing a PhD in hydrogen energy and undertaking research at leading institutions including the Technical University of Denmark and the University of St Andrews. She later moved into industry, taking senior technical and commercial roles in start-up environments, where she led the development and commercialisation of innovative hydrogen technologies. Her work has supported the progression of technologies from early-stage research to demonstration, alongside securing significant public funding and engaging with investors and industry partners.

Alongside her professional work, Berceste has contributed to the chemical sciences community through committee roles within the Royal Society of 深夜福利国产精品 and mentoring activities supporting students from underrepresented backgrounds. She is currently a steering committee member for the Hydrogen Innovation and Technology Conference, where she helps shape the strategic direction of the conference and brings together perspectives from industry, academia and government.

Berceste is passionate about bridging the gap between research, policy and industry, ensuring that innovation can be translated into real-world impact.

There is something genuinely special about helping someone take a step forward, especially when you know how much that kind of support can matter.

Q&A

Can you tell us more about your work?

My volunteer work focuses on uniting people across the chemical sciences to support the next generation of scientists and build strong collaborations between academia, industry, and government. By creating these connections, I aim to accelerate the implementation of emerging technologies, such as clean energy and sustainable infrastructure, through knowledge sharing and contributions to policy development.

At the heart of these activities is a commitment to supporting others and enabling the exchange of ideas. I believe that fostering such collaborations is essential to meeting global decarbonisation goals and making the chemical sciences more accessible, inclusive, and relevant to the wider world. By bridging the gap between technical innovation and real-world application, my volunteer efforts help ensure that scientific progress translates into meaningful societal impact.

Tell us about any highlights or memorable experiences you have had as a volunteer.

One of the moments that has stayed with me most was when my son started his first year of primary school. His teacher invited me into the classroom to introduce the children to science and what a scientist actually does. I brought along some simple experiments suitable for their age, but I also wanted to help them visualise the profession. I told them that being a scientist is like being a detective, looking for clues, putting them together, and solving a mystery.

The children were incredibly engaged, and we had a wonderful time exploring the experiments together. As I was leaving, one child said, 鈥渋f this is what a scientist does, then I want to be a scientist too.鈥 It was such a special and emotional moment for me.

Despite all the presentations I have given over my career, that was the most meaningful audience I have ever had, an audience to inspire future scientists. Seeing that spark of curiosity in a room full of children is something I will never forget.

What has been the biggest challenge when volunteering?

The biggest challenge has been finding the right balance alongside a busy work life. Like many people, there are times when work priorities are demanding, and it can be difficult to give as much time as you would like.

At the same time, I have come to realise that every contribution matters, and even a small contribution can make a meaningful impact. What matters most is doing your best with the time you have, and not worrying too much about the rest.

Do you have any advice for managing volunteering commitments alongside a busy work life?

For me, volunteering is something genuinely rewarding. While you are supporting others, you also grow as an individual, learn new things, and gain entirely different perspectives.

The key is to choose activities that you truly enjoy and care about. When volunteering aligns with your interests, it no longer feels like something you have to fit in. Instead, it becomes something you look forward to, even at the end of a busy day. In many cases, it can even be the best way to switch off from work and recharge.

What advice would you give to somebody contemplating volunteering with the RSC?

If you are thinking about volunteering with the Royal Society of 深夜福利国产精品, my advice would be simple: do not think twice, just get involved.

Many organisations talk about being inclusive and open to different ideas, but in my experience, the Royal Society of 深夜福利国产精品 is one of the places where you genuinely feel this in practice. It is a place where you are truly listened to, where different perspectives are welcomed, and where you feel your voice is valued equally.

It is also a great place to meet people outside your immediate field, build meaningful connections, and gain new perspectives across the chemical sciences. Over time, those connections can become one of the most valuable parts of the experience.
