Introduction
The Top of the Bench competition is designed to enthuse and excite children with chemistry and encourage them to consider further education and careers in chemistry. It is one of the RSC’s longest-standing activities for school children: together with our members we have been organising and running it for more than 20 years. While the competition will no longer run on a UK level, the RSC’s local sections in Scotland have committed to maintaining support for this event. Previous events have been much enjoyed by teachers and students alike. This year, we are expecting 21 teams from local schools!
The local section can provide support for reasonable travel costs to attend the event where a school feels this is needed to enable their participation.
Format
Rules for entering a team of 4 students - Each team should be made up of the following:
o 1 student from S2
o 2 students from S3

Team members must be in these school years for the heats and the Scottish Final.
Only students that have not taken part in the competition previously may participate.
Each team must be accompanied by one teacher.

Getting to the Venue, the Advanced Research Centre (ARC)
There are videos in the link below showing the directions to the ARC building from Hillhead or Kelvinhall subway stops: https://www.gla.ac.uk/research/arc/contact/.
Google Maps currently makes a mistake in sending you to the back of the building; this link is more indicative: https://maps.app.goo.gl/BceLDAKYjqhmHnjU8. If in doubt, refer to the ARC instructions above. See also a file on this page containing directions for download.
If coming from Dumbarton road, you can walk just past the Adam Smith Building school (new brick coloured building) and go up the stairs on the right side of the building. ARC is then straight ahead at the top of the stairs. As a marker, you will see a cafe open to the public on the ground floor of the ARC.
The nearest car park available is Bunhouse car park, next to Kelvin Hall. RingGo app can be used for payment, the cost is £10 for 3-10 hours. (https://www.glasgow.gov.uk/payanddisplaycarparks)
When entering the ARC building, facing the reception, turn right, where there will be a registration desk for check in upon arrival. Room 237ABC will be along the left hand side.
The fire exits for 237ABC are directly opposite the room, at the front of the ARC building. This will be highlighted at the beginning of the event
