This course aims to help scientists, engineers and others who need to write scientific or technical content, to tailor their writing to an appropriate 鈥渟cientific register鈥. It will focus primarily on scientific and technical reports within business and industry, academic theses and journal articles. Other formats requiring some scientific or technical content, such as technical product reports and business proposals will also be covered briefly. Specific features common to scientific, technical and academic writing will be discussed, along with which features to avoid. Practical advice will be given on structuring and writing reports and theses, including helpful hints and tips. Additional features regarding graphics, experimental data, referencing, proof-reading, the journal submission process and managing generative AI, will also be presented.
There will be scope for both planned and spontaneous interaction (Q&A), and slides will be leavened with visuals and apposite quotations.
