Molten Salt Reactors (MSRs) are a generation IV technology. If combined with online reprocessing this could lead to reactors with the potential to use nuclear waste as a fuel and burn 100% of the uranium! Resulting in waste storage demands orders of magnitude less that current nuclear waste.
Their proliferation resistant design, small footprint and modular factor assembly make the suitable for mass roll out and transportation; and even for production of useful isotopes for fusion, medicine and other applications.
All this in an inherently safe reactor design?
…Yes please! – but is the hype too good to be true?
Dr Michael Edmondson will describe how the use of salt can lead to a radically different type of nuclear reactor… and the challenges they still face (Hint – they need chemists!)
